inkjet photo printer
Is there a difference between an inkjet printer and a photo printer and if so what?

I was wondering if there was a difference and if possible what brand would be best to get.

Whilst the two terms are often used in conjunction, they actually mean totally different things.

Inkjet refers to a specific technology which is spraying wet ink onto the page and many are photo printers. Businesses that have large postal runs, such as utility bills, may print them with a large industrial inkjet printer which will print many pages per minute but be useless at printing a photo.

A photo printer is designed to give realistic colour reproduction and many are inkjets, but other technologies are available such as dye sublimation. In a dye-sub, a solid dye is heated and becomes a gas without becoming a liquid which is clearly very different from an inkjet.
